Patrick scours the internet for coloring pages or drawings or even painted art pieces for inspiration, then colors them in his own way using #11 and #15 seed beads. The animals and people, for example, are the hardest to do since the focal point is usually in the eyes. But Patrick always begins with the eyes, and he says if you can get those just right, then everything else just falls into place.
Each piece is meticulously framed keeping the theme or colors in mind to compliment the artwork. For example, black leather frames the Geisha, real dark bamboo frames Diablo the tiger, and green lacquer over Elmwood along with another linen covered frame put Rex the Fox in the proper woodland setting. The Basket of Fruit is beautifully framed in ornate walnut with rich linen matte which compliments the formal setting of this piece. Pearl Moon has a frame of distressed wood white washed to compliment the peaceful theme of the moon in its full glory. All the artwork is complete with acid free backing and Museum Quality glare-free glass to protect the artwork and keep the beads clean for years to come.
One of Patrick's favorite pieces is the basket of fruit. The coloring of the strawberries and grapes using several shades of the same color, via much experimentation he says, accomplished an almost 3-D effect. And the basket itself appears three dimensional in person as well. This piece was inspired by a black and white coloring page of a simple basket of fruit. Patrick added the apple and the bottle of wine to complete the composition. Because the background is also beaded, there are approximately 25,000 beads used in this piece. It took eight weeks to complete.
The Tiger, Diablo, took three months to complete. Patrick asked his friend, Chris Hoy (www.hoysart.net) who is a world renowned wild life artist, for permission to reproduce Diablo in beads. Chris gave him permission to copy any of his works whenever he wants because he is equally impressed with the finished results. The work is framed in real bamboo along with a linen matte and bronze colored insert. There are approximately 30,000 seed beads in this work as the background is beaded as well. Thanks Chris!
Future projects will include works by the old masters such as Renoir, Seurat, Picasso and Van Gogh.
